Course Description:  This course is a multiple-segment course that can be taken in part or in its entirety.  It utilizes didactic lecture and demonstration, literature synthesis and analysis, and laboratory experiences to fully engage the participant in the appropriate application of and rationale for the use of Physical Agent Modalities within the context of Occupational Therapy. 


This course, taken in its entirety, meets all the standards required by the Georgia State Licensure Board for didactic and experiential learning for OTRs to become certified to utilize Physical Agents during Occupational Therapy treatment. 


Topics covered will include AOTA regulations and licensure requirements, principles of heat, light and electricity as utilized during Physical Agent Modality application, indication and contra-indications for modality usage, appropriate modality selection and combination, and  complements and grading of treatment techniques and modalities. 


The learner will exit the course with the skills to competently apply Physical Agent Modalities, articulate justification of modality selection, and appropriately document and bill for their usage. 


Course Objectives:  

  • Specify anatomical structures and physiological processes involved in the application of Physical Agent Modalities
  • Categorize thermal modalities by various heating types
  • Utilize the most appropriate modalities for desired treatment outcome
  • Select appropriate temperature, application time & sanitation of commonly used modalities
  • Determine the most appropriate modality for various diagnosis and anatomical structures
  • Describe common application parameters
  • Establish a treatment algorithm to assist in the application of thermal & electrical modalities
  • Appropriately document goals as related to specific diagnoses
  • Define the short and long term effects of thermal and electrical modalities
  • Correctly apply and administer modalities through a clinical check-off process
  • Implement the principles of thermal & electrical modalities when forming therapeutic goals and intervention​
